세계문화유산 산사 일곱 곳의 역사와 문화

이 책은 ？？Diary of a Korean Zen Monk？？(『선방일기』 영문판), ？？Korean Buddhism？？ 등을 비롯해 매년 한국불교 관련 외국어 서적을 기획·출간하여 우리 문화를 세계에 알리고 있는 한국불교종단협의회의 신간이다.
이 책은 2018년 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 등재된 일곱 사찰에 대한 쉽고, 보다 깊은 이해를 돕는 역사·문화 가이드로서, 약 130여 컷의 사진을 통해 산속 깊이 자리한 일곱 사찰의 사계절 아름다운 풍경을 담아냈다. 페이지를 넘겨 볼수록 평화롭고 차분한 분위기를 느낄 수 있다.
무엇보다 각 사찰의 안내지도와 함께 저자의 친절한 가이드에 따라, 대표 전각(건물), 문화재 그리고 켜켜이 쌓인 역사의 흔적들을 만나게 되면서 지면을 통해 이루어지는 산사 답사는 더욱 생생해지고, 한층 풍부해진다.

최근의 코로나 사태 속에서 국내의 독자들도 직접 산사를 찾아가기 어려운 시기, 책을 통해 산사를 만난다는 것은 물론 간접적인 체험에 불과하지만 우리는 인류의 문화유산이 된 산사의 진면모를 발견할 수 있게 된다.

산사 답사로 한 스텝 더 들어가는 한국불교 탐방

지난해 출간된 ？？Stepping into the Buddha’s Land？？가 우리나라 사찰 문화 답사를 위한 아주 기초적인 데 집중했다면, 이 책은 한 스텝 더 들어가 오랜 역사 위에 그 명맥을 이어오고 있는 세계문화유산 산사 일곱 곳을 답사하는 데 집중함으로써 독자들에게 ‘응용 길잡이’가 되어 준다.
이 책의 특징 몇 가지를 소개한다면, 먼저 일곱 산사, 더 나아가 우리 불교의 역사·문화는 물론 그 문맥과 엮일 수밖에 없는 사상적·신앙적 내용들도 함께 녹아들어 있다는 점이다. 하지만 일곱 산사의 특징적인 데를 이해함에 필수적인 사항만을 가려 이야기하고 있어 관심 있는 누구나 읽고 이해함에 장애되지 않는다.
다음으로 일곱 산사 각각이 가지고 있는 특징적인 것을 주제로 한 글이 매력적이다. 예를 들면 양산 통도사는 우리나라 삼보(三寶)사찰 중 불보(佛寶)사찰로서 석가모니 부처님의 사리를 봉안한 금강계단을 중심으로 한 역사적·신앙적인 측면을 드러낸다.
한편 우리나라에서 가장 오래된 목조 건축물을 자랑하는 안동 봉정사의 경우 가람을 구성한 전각의 고(古)건축적 매력을 전하는 데 집중한다.

이 책은 현재 불교계와 학계에서 활발한 활동을 이어오고 있는 미술사학자 주수완 씨가 집필하였다. 더불어 한국불교에 대한 깊은 관심으로 불교계에서 오랜 시간 동안 통·번역을 해 온 박희원 씨가 영문 번역을 맡았다. 저자와 번역자는 외국인의 입장에서 우리 불교를 잘 이해할 수 있도록 이번 발간 작업에 큰 애정을 쏟았다.

마지막으로 외국 독자들을 위한 책 소개를 위해 내용 일부를 발췌해 본다.

Mountains are places that embrace the world. In other words, in the mountains, people could readily understand and accept one another without regard to social class.
For those who come together at a mountain temple, the only thing that seems to matter is their shared belief in Buddhism.

Standing in front of Ilju-mun Gate, the entrance to the temple, one finds two stone pillars that bear the following inscriptions:

A diverse group of people shall live together, but they must always remain in harmony,
Since they wear monk’s robes(kasaya) and shave their heads, they must follow the Vinaya(monastic disciplines).

These inscriptions share the same philosophy reflected in the UNESCO Constitution, which says, “Ignorance of each other’s ways and lives has been a common cause, throughout the history of mankind,” of war. For these reasons, “lasting and sincere support of the peoples of the world” must be founded “upon the intellectual and moral solidarity of mankind.”
