지은이 홍일록(洪日錄)
경북 대구출생으로 경북 중 고등학교를 거쳐 서울대학교 농과대학을 졸업하였다. Posco에 입사하여 평범한 회사생활을 하던 그가 영어와 인연을 맺게 된 것은 우연히 등을 떠밀려 응시하게 된 단체토익시험이 계기가 된다. 1차 시험결과에 크게 실망한 그는 33세의 늦은 나이에 영어공부를 처음부터 다시 시작하기로 결심한다. 당시 카세트플레이어를 태어나서 처음 만져봤다는 그는 그만의 독특한 공부방식으로 정진하여 단기간 내에 토익 리슨 부문 만점(495점)을 3회에 걸쳐 획득하였다. 30대 중반에 미국지사 주재원으로 발령받아 해외생활을 시작하였으며 그 후 싱가포르를 거쳐 인도 뉴델리지사장을 역임하는 등 십 여 년을 해외 영업일선에서 보냈다.

그는 이 책 ‘생존영어 55’를 통해 세상에 던지고 싶은 메시지가 하나 있다고 한다. 그것은 영어가 결코 스트레스와 공포의 대상이 아니라 재미와 기쁨의 상대가 되어야한다는 것이다. 그는 이러한 사명감으로 마치 우물가에서 물을 긷듯 아스라한 기억의 심연에서 한 두레박 두 두레박 미국생활에서의 에피소드들을 퍼 올려 이 책을 엮어내게 되었다고 한다.
