서울대학교 사회학과를 졸업하고 동 대학원에서 석사 과정을 마쳤다. 역서 『철학과 예술사회학』(1983), 학위논문을 발전시킨 『칼 만하임의 지식사회학연구』(1983)를 출간한 후, 1984년 미국 하버드대학에서 수학하였으며 1989년 박사학위를 받았다. 귀국 후 한림대학교에서 조교수와 부교수로 재임하였고, 1994년 서울대학교 사회학과에 조교수로 임용되어 학과장과 사회발전연구소 소장, 1998년 스탠퍼드대학교 방문교수, 2005년 캘리포니아대학교(샌디에이고) 초빙교수를 역임하였다. 국제협력본부장(2006-2008)을 거쳐 현재 서울대학교 사회학과 교수로 재직 중이다. 교수직을 시작한 이래 여러 권의 저서를 냈다. 1990년대에는 민주화와 노동문제를 분석한 『한국의 노동정치와 시장』(1991), 『열린 시장, 닫힌 정치』(1994), 『시장과 복지정치』(1997), 『한국의 노동복지』(1996), 『정치 없는 정치 시대』(1999) 등을 펴냈다. 이후 IMF 초기 외환위기를 맞는 사회학자의 비통한 심정을 담은 『또 하나의 기적을 향한 짧은 시련』(1998), 한국의 의료 분쟁과 제도적 모순을 분석한 『의사들도 할 말 있었다』(2001)를 출간했고, 노무현정부의 등장배경과 통치양식을 분석한 『한국, 무슨 일이 일어나고 있나』(2003)와 『한국, 어떤 미래를 선택할 것인가』(2006)를 썼다. 한국의 복지체계를 비교분석한 『세계화와 복지국가』(2001)를 편집했고, 복지정책의 구조적 특성과 결정요인을 조명한 『복지국가의 태동: 세계화, 민주화, 그리고 한국의 복지정치』 (2006)를 출간했다. 에세이집으로 『나타샤와 자작나무』(2005)가 있으며, 1990년대 초반 이후 주요 신문에 칼럼을 집필했다. 『다시 광장에서』(2006), 『독 안에서 별을 헤다』(2009) 등 칼럼집을 냈다. 2004년 7월 이후 현재까지 중앙일보 기명 칼럼니스트로 활동 중이다.

Dr. Song, Ho-Keun is Professor of Sociology at Seoul National University. Dr. Song also is an author of many academic publications and popular books that attract over ten thousand readers in average. He was the Dean of International Affairs at Seoul National University (SNU). Since his appointment as Dean in August of 2006, he directs the Office of International Affairs at SNU and spearheads the university’s international activities and initiatives. He was the former Chair of the Department of Sociology and Director of The Institute for Social Development and Policy Research at Seoul National University.
Dr. Song received his PhD in Sociology from Harvard University and his MA and BA from Seoul National University. His areas of specialization include Social Policy, Welfare State, Sociology of Labor Markets, Political Sociology, and Korean Society. He has published and lectured widely on these subjects both in Korea and internationally. Dr. Song was a Visiting Scholar at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and taught as a Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Rim Studies at the University of California, San Diego. As a prolific and gifted writer, Dr. Song has authored numerous papers and several notable books. Dr. Song has held prominent advisory and editorial roles on Korean government boards and committees and for the Korean Journal of Sociology and the Korean Sociological Association.
